In fact, while still not being boring because of the need to stay alert for threats of any kind at any giving moment, police work, especially at first, can be pretty simple and fast-forward; ranging from basic tasks making sure to keep the public order to more serious cases where protecting property and even lives comes in at stake.
What do police officers do?
At first, while still studying or being right out of police school, police officers start by taking care of minor duties such as directing traffic and acting as security for the city in public events for example. After gaining the basic experience needed, rookies enter straight into action by starting their daily tasks to keep the public order and protect the lives/property of the civilians. For the most part, those tasks firstly consist of answering calls and patrolling their assigned area. After gaining even more experience, police officers often specialize in certain departments or aspects of the law enforcement also specializing their skills to attain a certain status or position in the law force.
What do police officers do on a typical day?
That highly depends on the rank and status of the officer. A rookie, for example, might direct traffic for most of its day rarely doing any other kind of police work. A Sherrif, on the other hand, might spend most of his day, in the office, coordinating his police force while also rarely going out in the field himself. With that being said, if we were to speak for the majority of police officers and basic state troopers, a typical day would consist of getting and answering to a couple of calls on the radio, doing some daily traffic stops and other activities of the sort having the main goal of maintaining the peace and order.
Where do police officers work?
Police officers work pretty much everywhere because pretty much every place needs police officers. If we take example on the state of Quebec, we can observe that pretty much the entirety of this huge land is covered by some kind of police force. In large cities, we often see municipal organisations form such as the SPVM in Montreal while the rest of the less dense-populated areas are covered by the State troopers such as the SQ in Quebec. Both types of organisations have their advantages like far-located areas bonus for instance and disadvantages like having to agree to get deported anywhere in the state at your hiring in the case of state or federal related law enforcement.
How can I become police officer ?
The answer here strongly differs because of the different requirements asked from state to state and from country to country to become a police officer. For example, here in Quebec, the normal path to becoming a police officer in any organisation of the state is to finish high school, then move on to 3 years of Police Technology in college and then finishing your training at the National police academy which lasts for another 15 weeks. Contrary to that, certain states of the United-states only require a high school diploma and a couple of months of training to become a police officer. In all cases, superior studies are always pushed to try to pursue higher and more specialized skills in the officers.
How much money do police officers make?
Assuming you live in the United-states, you would probably average somewhere in between $60 000 to $62 000 per year which is the average salary for both a New York police officer and the entirety of cops in the USA. In Canada however, if you live in the state of Quebec, like me, you will start at a rough $48 000 per year but ramp your way up to $84 000 per year after 60 months of work.
What kinds of additional training do police officers need?
Police officers work in a field where they have to constantly adapt to the changing environment and laws. For that particular reason, they often will have additional training during the entire course of their career to stay up to date in a work where a small mistake can make a big difference. This additional training mainly consists of training repeatedly old and new ways to pursue investigative procedures, modify and adapt their self-defense techniques and also simply studying the new laws always evolving.
What are the dangers of being police officer ?
As we all know, police work comes with its fair share of risks and danger. Especially in this field, they are plenty of different aspects of danger to consider, too many in fact to enumerate them all in this short answer. They are, of course, the physical risks that come in with having the power and pretty much the obligation to enter in physical altercations with strangers not knowing what their intentions are or if they are armed but beyond that; there is also the risk of getting in serious trouble with the law for many reasons (far more than the average every day person) and finally, the risk of mental health complications on the long run due to trauma or high intensity events that occur on a daily basis in the case of police officers.
What are the chances that police officers will be replaced by robots soon?
In short, probably not. A police officer works demands the learning and mastering of so many aspects that touch many fields such as social studies, self-defense, quick judgmental thinking and a lot more; making the chances of creating of robot in the near-future that would be able to be as good or even more efficient than a police officer is pretty much impossible. Also, it would be hard to create a robot that would have the proper understanding of the ins and outs of the human mind without actually having one.

Personally, I am now looking at my last year before getting my college diploma in Police Technology and am very excited about getting in the National Police Academy of Quebec. For the moment, I only intend on becoming a simple police officer probably for the organisation of the SPVM in Montreal and look for opportunities from that point on.
